Teenager raped by taxi driver in Damascus
|
and then by several other men before finding help.
By Mais Naief Krydee Translated by: Girgis Kalzi In a society surrounded by corruption, and where culture and thought is fast becoming extinct, what was the future ever likely to hold for a young girl testing the cold Damascene nights? How did she manage to encounter people with no mercy, or principles or ethics?
Alone, and without knowledge of a world outside her small village, she strayed far, too far from her world to escape the horrors that the night had in store for her. Fate attacked her with all it could muster in evil in a place that doesn’t respect courtesy nor does it practise it, but instead it pretends to, to cover up the depravities carried out, to cover its failings under the pretences of kindness. So what happened to her on that fateful night?
Still just a child of 16 years, she ventured to the outskirts of the city to take her exams travelling in the glare of a driver who was used to hunting his prey. She innocently thought love was what made peoples dreams come true, taught by television series and films. She held on to meeting the man of her dreams, until that dream faded along with her other dreams. Along came a man who only resembled nightmares, who punished and pursued the young girl and chased away her simple dreams.
Her astonishment and intrigue compounded her when she saw the dresses and hairstyles styled with hair straighteners and mobile phones the girls from her generation were wearing and using. Things she never imagined she’d use until the night of her wedding when a man her family accepted would knock on her door and make her an honest woman. In Lemans’ terms she didn’t know the ways of fate, or the limits of introspection and conservatism that she leans towards. So she rode now without purpose on the micro-bus that was heading to Damascus. She spoke to her companion to her side and when she arrived she found herself alone in a big city, no friends or money or anyone, except the passing gazes, not those willing to give help, nor ones which stopped to ask why she was in such a strange place, that could swallow tens of teenagers without hesitation. She stopped a taxi after she became tired of walking, and from an experts view the perverted driver discovered that she had nowhere to go, and no family to run to there. He asked her to pay him knowing full well that she couldn’t comply, as she had no money. She admitted to him that she was mistaken to come to this place. She said she wanted to go home or call her family and originally a sense of charity rose in him, but he decided to take his equivalent of work in advance. That young beauty whose sad eyes told a sad story, couldn’t escape from this expert hunters net. He made the girl as an object for anyone who would pay enough for her.
He then talked her into going to his house, where she stayed for a night with him, where he obviously helped himself to her virginity and the day after he took her to another house where two of his friends were. Telling her that he found her work, he left her prey among two animals, who had their way with her.
He finally returned to find the girl in a terrible state, so he offered to her the ‘opportunity’ to work in this ‘enterprise’ and that she would soon gather much money from it. She refused and struggled to free herself, which made him nervous so he told her that she should forget that she met him, and ran away. Once again she reached a state of melancholy, realizing she couldn’t return to her family, so she work any sort of job. There was another man laying in wait to take advantage of her condition. He led her to his house where he said his family was ready to help her, but instead of chivalry he also took his fill from her innocent body. The girl remained hopeful that she would one day marry the man, who would show her mercy prevent her from returning to her conservative family who would never stand for issues of virtue such as this. This other man grew bored of her, and left her at his families’ house for days, where she met another man who presented to her a job as a cleaner in one of his houses. The girl agreed choosing to live, any life, for the sake of living. Talking to the mistress of the house eventually got her to call the girls family and negotiate her return, conditional to the girls’ safety. Eventually the girl was taken to hospital, because of the multiple rapes. From there, the police took custody of the girl, and after two months her family took her back after she was the talk of the whole community. This gave everyone the right of giving her meaningless speeches to ‘protect’ her family’s dignity. The revenge for the act turned into judgmental stares that removed her from their world as a tainted girl who no-one wanted to remember.
One final thought; the perpetrators remain to this day free, and the girl has become completely secluded and isolated, her eyes speak before her tongue in the image of a tear drop, a tear drop which she dare not let out before the judgmental eyes around her. She doesn’t yet know fully what happened or what her crime was, except that everyone sees her as guilty of it. She speaks of what the elders say was her crime, but she doesn’t understand it, nor did she ever find anyone to explain it to her except in two words “wrong - dirty”. The mere idea of thinking of a man before marriage is rejected, she didn’t ever comprehend that this generic ‘man’ would ever treat her in the way she was treated. She never imagined a man hiding beneath her clothes to use her. Unfortunately many stalkers and perverts had been ‘honest’ before they destroyed her. She suffered before she met someone who would save her from them, someone with the least amount of principles still had more than them, who wouldn’t show her the way home, or force the taxi driver to the police station. I didn’t write this article for a benign debate, or for mockery’s sake, but to remind everyone that society’s fatal mistakes drive us further apart day after day, we don’t want our teenagers to become whores because of our treatment. We want every girl to be a useful individual here and everywhere. Thus we will stand with the victim and allow no-one to victimize her. She’s an immature girl, under the age of consent, with whom the crime cannot stand because no-one told her right from wrong. We shall wipe the dirt from her, believing that it will never stick to her essence. We want a clean life for her and we should give that to her, and her likes. Let us all protect our young girls by stopping the brutal regression and subversion, not merely out of kindness for anyone, but our solemn duty, a sacred duty that we should all believe in. |
