The Dead Heritage, Not to Burden the Following Generations

By: Yahya Al Aous - Al-Thara

It never happened that, a book was banned for its discriminative and illiberal thought towards woman, rather the opposite, tens of books goes for re -publication, those feed extreme ideas against woman every year, without being noticed by any one, to reach many who are classified as half-readers, to add to their attitude ossification and rigidity, what may be the most dangerous ideas in these books, which belong to the dark and decadence ages, that they are still being used, as references for some religious studies and as courses for some jurisprudent schools.

So we find them in universities and public libraries, as products of publishing houses and in the show windows of the scattered commercial libraries, just because they are classified under, Islamic studies and Islamic culture, but are they really so?
And, is what is going to be shown, of some of what is in these books represent part of our Islamic culture?
A year ago, I found a book for Abi Al-Faraj Al-Jawsi, titled " women precepts " in a commercial public library, in quite cheep price not exceeding a hundred Syrian pounds, the title motivated me to review what Al-Jawsi has chosen for us, of precepts for which he was so keen to support and document, so that no one dares to challenge or vilify.
The introduction of the book says : woman's body is a fault all of them, except for her face and hands, they can't travel for a day and a night without the company of unmarriageable person, for it is known that, some women in many of their life's issues, act according to their ardent emotion, sometimes without thinking or disposition, so they go astray because of the glowing emotion.
In another place of the book Al-Jawsi quotes Ibn Aqeel's saying : I found for some of the branching scholars, a goodly branching, if an animal which desires women, it is said that, if a monkey is alone with a woman, or if he sees her sleeping, he demands copulation, and in some erotic women, who may invite him to herself, so, houses in which there are women should be guarded against entering such animals " and from Ata'a Al-
Kharasani he quotes : " women are not to be greeted, nor they should greet " and from Zobayedi : " applicable to women, what is applicable to snakes, they should stay in their homes"
In warning women from getting out : women are suppose to be careful from getting out, as much as they could, for if she is saved from herself, people are not safe from her, and if she has to get out, with the permission of her husband, then in ragged appearance, make her way the empty places, and avoid the streets and markets, and be careful that, her voice is not be heard, walk on the road side not in the middle.
His book " Talbees Iblees " the Misguidance of Lucifer " is not better , it has enough of derogation, discrimination and despite, for woman.
As for Abu Hamid AL-Ghazali, writes in his registry book "Al-Ihyaa "about seeing woman, as saying : " They (women) are dominated by bad manners and poorness of brain, that is not corrected, with other than a sort of kindness, mixed with politics " in another place he says
" woman must be sitting at home, accompanying her spin, not often go out, talk less to her neighbors."
But Ibn Qudama, in his book "Al-Mughni" when talking about leading men in prayers, he resembles woman with lunatic, saying "We have the saying of the prophet " a woman never leads man in prayers" because she is not allowed to men, so he didn't permit her to lead them, as lunatic ! "
While Qurtobi says, in his book " Al-Mufhem "about preference of marriage and worship :
" marrying is better than engagement in worship, it may be said, that was in the beginning of Islam, for women may be of help, in religious and worldly matters, reduce expenses, help on benevolent and fearing of God, compassion and affectionateness for husbands. But in these times we take refuge to God from devil and women, by almighty God, time has come for seclusion and bachelorship, rather escape from their temptation, and begin to journey, and no power without almighty's power "
Hundreds of other books, using jurisprudence and jurisprudents, to spread hostile thought against woman, justifies beating her, allow murdering her in the cause of honor, establish her absolute follow to man, default her body and voice and building for her prisons in homes that, she is not allowed to leave them without an unmarriageable companion!
Is this really part of our Islamic culture? And where this kind of thinking which propagandize discrimination against woman, may lead us to.
Where then is the role of Ministry of Culture, which doesn't hoard an effort to ban books, for mere vagueness, paraphrastic possibilities and symbolizing, while it does not attend to these sorts of books, which are of not less danger than the books of astray fanatic thought?
It is sure that, harmful herbs are filling the shelves of our libraries, we are not here to demand uprooting them, for they are part of our heritage, but what is required is that, there should be separation, between us and the heritage, which doesn't do any thing other than taking us backward, for the values which can't survive in these times, must be pushed away, just not to burden the following generations with the religious heritage of the dead as says Carl Marx,
