Woman and Democratic Transition

Mays Al Kredy – Al Thara
Translation : Ghassan Al – Nassayef

23-4-2011

In the mid of what is going on , which Syria is Experiencing , and what the Syrian street has put forward of political demands , expressed by a foreign move from the structure of a society, that is not used to get down to peaceful remonstration ever before , and away from getting into details of what has happened , the fallen dead and the wounded, for whom we stand respectfully with glorification for all their wounds

but what has happened of developments public movements , and the maturity of the youth through their experience in the field , which proved the excellence of practical conjuncture, and the public merging outside theorization , which did not lead to the awareness state which is secreted by public movements , during the few weeks in which these voices raised
Our concern here is the move of Syrian woman , although it is limited, but it showed the political awareness of this active partner in the social structure , who was not recognized before except under a specific roof through the calls for amendments of some articles from personal status code , or the issue of citizenship, inheritance and marriage, so that woman contribution and initiation sometimes in political demands , are certain proofs that woman has human rights , that can’t be restricted in some minor issues , but society as whole should look toward democracy , which insure the structure of rules , that allows woman in later stages , to secret her systematic struggle in a new cultured society .
0n the 18th and 19th of April 2011, women demonstration came out in Barzeh area , where woman is not content with humble presence in a number of remonstrations , and move to organize herself in an initiation to shim the demands of society as a whole , to be acquainted with this case , I went asking women who contributed to these remonstrations , where the most important axis for this questionnaire and inquiry was, why woman went out to demonstrate ?
MRs Um Mohammed says :
“ The demonstration started with four women out of five, but ended up with two hundred women , then men joined , backing this remonstration . their ( men’s ) reaction was great gratitude, for what is Syrian people have experienced of harm , because of unemployment , and the hike of Diesel prices, is severe, specially that , our young men in Barzeh are relaying on their work in quarries, so they have all been affected by these circumstances , and the high taxes on those quarries .
So , you went out for economic demands , then ?
Poverty is a problem , but we need to express ourselves, we demand the freedom of speech and expression, for every time we talk about freedom , they accuse us that we want to get out with short or bikini, but the truth is , we want to speak and complain about the state of things, nag of the state where the country have reached , bribery and corruption ,the unjust courts and lift emergency state , so that we be able to express our demands .
Is this movement contain a sectarian reaction , or a religious attitude ?
My neighbors are from different sects, and I am ready to protect them , if it is necessary , women have gone out for peaceful and reformative demands , woman is suffering of masculine society persecution on her , don’t you think ?
Pressure is the reason …man predominate woman , as a result of society control upon him , and political demands solution is manifested in moving towards a better reality , autocracy is the reason, thus our men welcomed our remonstration and going out for their support .
MRs Um Hussam, also expressed her point of view, by saying :
“ women is downtrodden and ripped off her rights , jobs are not secured , I stayed five years until I got a job M although I have a Diploma and a Master degrees .
We see that the amendment of constitutions and regulations , secure woman freedom , for woman also have political demands , because achieving these demands are reflected on the social and economic situation of the country , and accountability by the people to authority , surely will lead to changing state of things , we demand lifting emergency state, so we can obtain our right, freedom of opinion and expression , which are not available because of fear of security systems .
Freedom secure our ability to question those who are responsible , so after that economic reforms are achieved , any society in which adjudication and education are right , the society is righteous and good , raising salaries is not solution to our problems, because there is a great section of society outside government employment , we also want most that no one is above the law , we as women came out to demonstrate convinced, demanding radical reforms , not only amending a law of alimony , or custody, because these will be definite result of the chang in the structure of the law .
MRs Nada Al – khesh, a political activist, says :
“ woman looks at her issue more deeply than the partial presentations , for freedom is connected to the general demands , and this woman is a mother , a sister and a daughter of prisoners , so she rejects the state of emergency , who started to be aware of totalitarianism, defending her ego , connected directly to her cause .
The present laws are backward, in connection with woman , needs to be reviewed, but now, demand for democracy is the essence , and as long as there is a presentation for amending constitution , no use of talking about partial things, because it will be a result of society development , for democratic state allows woman to express through it , herself and struggle for her cause , fore autocracy is related to old cultures and the currently practiced laws, and the woman cause is connected with the general structure and are not detached from it , so, movement starts initially by seeking the change of the structure of these laws, then woman move starts .
Thus, we find that , Syrian woman decided to join youth’s demands , took the initiation , grip to her right for free expression , the democratic society , which is considered as an incubator to all sorts of struggle, to assure that she is part of a social state, and that there is no partition between her cause and the social cause, who will not accept partial grants, to sprinkle ash in the eyes , who is also a part of a human state , seeking more dignity , boasting that human connection .
