Dear conferees and colleagues,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Damascus University, and to our international guests I say, welcome to Syria.
Not far away from where we convene today, hidden from the hustle and bustle of modern life, under the shade of towering pine trees, and beneath the ancient majesty of the walls of old Damascus lies the tomb of Khawla Bint Al-Azwar, the 7th century pioneering Arab Muslim woman who participated in the conquest of Damascus. |

Some of these practices are beneficial to all members, while others are harmful to a specific group, such as women.

Comments on Relationships between men and women:
Islam claim in order to liberate women and relieve them from inferiority. Women and men are equal in Islam. There is a chapter in the Holy Koran that says men and women are created from the same material and same spirit and soul which was created by God himself. God created Eve from the soul of Adam and another spirit. |

In the name Of Allah
It is an honor for me to address the international conference on Women and Traditions.  The organizer of this conference should b applauded for their timely initiative,in a most sensitive and volatile region of the world. The topics undertaken by this conference, Traditions and Women are contentious issues, both face conceptual and social challenges today's world. In a globalizing world while modernizing societies confront tradition; women feel entangled in escalating clashes, in the cultural, social and economic spheres. |

Final Conclusions of the “Conference on Women and Tradition”

The conference on women and tradition, which took place in Damascus, Syria between the 13th and the 15th of November 2005, has made a number of important proposals, based in general on the following three topics:

|
With the cooperation of a large number of civil society activists, "Etana Press" set up a workshop yesterday morning under the title, "Women and Peacemaking".The workshop took place in the auditorium of St. John the Damascene Church in the Abou Roummaneh quarter of Damascus. |

"Women and religion" a seminar by Etana Press
|
In preparation for a conference entitled "women and tradition" , which will be held in September 2005, Etana press organized a seminar that dealt with the topic "women and religion"; one of the main topics in the coming conference's agenda. Attended the seminar representatives of women's organizations and civil associations in Syria. |
