Internships are an essential vehicle that aid students interested in pursuing
journalism as a career. As journalists ourselves we know how important is to
gain practical skills, and strongly believe that journalism can only
successfully be taught through direct experience and not as a theoretical
abstract. Because of this we offer a unique opportunity for students in
Damascus to take part in an internship at the Arabic on-line magazine Al-Thara,
under the patronage of Etana Press.
We are
a weekly review of scholarship, culture and literature on women's issues. Based
in Syria, our goal is to provide a reliable resource of international, regional
and local documents – for example, laws and conventions – concerning women. It
also aims to monitor social ills and practices that violate rights and freedoms,
especially those of women, as they are the most vulnerable and suppressed sector
of Syrian society. The review tries to expose these problems and propose
alternative courses of action.
Etana
Press, the publishing house of Al-Thara, employs a holistic approach in
addressing social issues that combines theory and practice, as well as
consciousness and social activism. It has facilitated the visits of foreign
journalists and academics to Syria, as well as organized a number of
exhibitions, conferences and seminars to highlight social problems within Syrian
society. Participation in such events is also open to interns. Etana seeks to
fill the gap between public and private institutions in contributing to the
development of a civic culture in Syria.
To
obtain a reference letter the successful applicant must conduct an internship of
at least one month. The intern can choose to concentrate on the area of
journalism where s/he feels most confident. These skills are all invaluable to
any journalist based in the Middle East and include:
Translating:
from
Arabic to English or
from
English to Arabic
Writing
Editing
Conducting interviews
Research
The
Intern must either write one independent piece or translate one given article
weekly and must visit the office in Jaramana twice weekly, for a minimum of
three hours, where s/he will be greeted by tea, coffee and a friendly working
environment.
